Crawl spaces, basements, burrows along foundations, and lower levels near food and water.
How to Identify It
- Large, heavy body with a blunt, rounded nose
- Small ears and eyes relative to the head
- Thick, scaly tail shorter than the head and body
- Leaves large, blunt-ended droppings
Signs of a Problem
- Large capsule-shaped droppings (see Mouse vs. Rat Droppings)
- Burrows and greasy 'rub marks' along walls and foundations
- Gnaw marks on wood, wiring, and even soft pipe
- Nighttime noises low in the structure
