Expert Cockroach Control in Hampton Roads
Targeted gel baiting and growth regulators wipe out roach infestations at the source. Humid summers and mild winters give pests a long season here, so we work the source rather than the symptom — find where the infestation starts, clear it, and close the way back in.
Which Roach Do You Have? The Four We Treat in Hampton Roads
Four cockroach species account for nearly every roach call we run between Virginia Beach and the Peninsula, and the treatment changes with the name. A German roach problem lives in the kitchen and is solved with baiting inside; the other three breed outdoors or in the damp under the house, so the fix is worked at the crawl space, the drains and the perimeter. Tap the species below that matches what you are seeing.

German Cockroach
Blattella germanica
- How to spot it
- Small — about half an inch — and tan to light brown, with two dark racing stripes running down the shield behind the head. If the roaches you see are little ones in the kitchen or bathroom, this is almost certainly your species.

American Cockroach
Periplaneta americana
- How to spot it
- The big one — an inch and a half or more, reddish brown, with a pale figure-eight pattern on the shield behind the head. This is the roach locals call a palmetto bug, and the adults can fly short distances toward light on hot evenings.

Oriental Cockroach
Blatta orientalis
- How to spot it
- Around an inch long and glossy, nearly black — the so-called water bug. It moves slower than the others, cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces well, and turns up low: floor drains, basement corners, the concrete around a sump or water heater.

Smokybrown Cockroach
Periplaneta fuliginosa
- How to spot it
- Slightly smaller than an American roach and colored an even, polished mahogany from head to wingtip — no stripes, no figure-eight. A strong flier that comes to porch lights and windows on warm nights, which is usually how homeowners meet one.
What an Active Roach Infestation Looks Like
This is our own footage from a Norfolk home. Pull a kitchen cabinet apart on a heavy job and you get the picture above: adult German cockroaches and smaller, darker nymphs moving together in the same corner, with pepper-like droppings and dark smear marks worked into the wood and the wall behind it. That mix matters more than the count. Adults alone can be new arrivals off a grocery box or a secondhand appliance, but nymphs mean the roaches are breeding inside the cabinet, and the spotting means they have been there long enough to make it home. Roaches are nocturnal and stay pressed into tight, warm spaces, so what walks across the counter at night is a fraction of what is behind the hinges, under the sink and inside the motor housing of the dishwasher — which is why treatment has to reach the harborage rather than the countertop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do store-bought bug sprays fail to stop a German cockroach infestation?
Over-the-counter aerosols kill the roaches you can see on the counter and drive the rest deeper into cabinet hinges, appliance motor housings, and wall voids. They also miss the next generation entirely: a female German cockroach carries an egg capsule, or ootheca, holding roughly 30 to 40 eggs, and that capsule shields the eggs from surface sprays. We use non-repellent transfer baits that roaches carry back into the harborage along with insect growth regulators that keep nymphs from maturing, so the population collapses instead of rebounding a few weeks later.

Stop German Roaches at the Source
Baits and growth regulators reach the harborage that aerosols push them into.
Get a QuoteWhat are the signs of a cockroach infestation in my home?
Roaches leave several tells, and where you find them hints at the species: German cockroaches cluster in warm, humid spots like under sinks and around dishwashers, while larger American cockroaches turn up in basements, drains, and crawl spaces.
- Live roaches seen scattering at night when a light comes on.
- Dark, pepper-like droppings in cabinets and behind appliances.
- A musty, oily odor lingering in kitchens or bathrooms.
- Egg cases, or oothecae, tucked into cracks and corners.

Get a QuoteWhere do American cockroaches (palmetto bugs) come from in coastal homes?
The large roaches Hampton Roads homeowners call palmetto bugs are American cockroaches, and they almost always start outside rather than in your kitchen. They breed in dark, humid places like crawl spaces, mulch beds, storm drains, and sewer lines that stay damp in our low-lying areas. When summer heat builds or heavy coastal rain floods those spaces, they move upward into the house through crawl space vents, plumbing chases, and gaps under door sweeps. Mild tidewater winters mean the outdoor population rarely dies back, so the pressure returns each year unless the entry points and the moisture behind them are addressed.

Schedule ServiceAre cockroaches in my home a health risk for my family?
Yes. Cockroaches travel through drains, sewer lines, and crawl spaces, and they carry bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli on their legs and bodies onto counters, dishes, and food prep surfaces. Their shed skins and droppings also break down into airborne particles that are a recognized trigger for asthma attacks and allergy symptoms, and children in infested homes tend to be affected most. That combination is why a roach problem is worth treating promptly rather than waiting to see whether it clears on its own.

Protect Your Family's Health
Have the infestation identified and cleared before it spreads through the kitchen.
Get Free InspectionAre your cockroach treatments safe for my kids and pets?
Yes. We use pet-safe and family-safe products and apply them precisely in the cracks, voids, and harborage areas where roaches hide, keeping treatment away from your family's everyday surfaces. For households that prefer it, all-natural product options are available upon request. Our technicians will explain the products used and share simple tips to keep your kitchen and bathrooms less inviting to roaches.

Request TreatmentCan a heavy roach infestation ruin my attic insulation or ductwork?
It can. In attics and crawl spaces a large population saturates fiberglass insulation with droppings and shed skins, and that is usually where the lingering musty odor in an infested home comes from. Roaches also harbor inside duct runs, which spreads the same debris through the system every time the air handler runs. Because Universal is the Total Home Health Professionals, we can clear the infestation, remove and replace contaminated insulation, and clean the duct system as one coordinated project instead of three separate calls.

How many visits does it take to get rid of cockroaches?
It depends on the species. Large American roaches coming in from outside can often be brought under control in one or two targeted treatments once the entry points and the moisture are addressed. An established German cockroach infestation in a kitchen is a different job: it needs an intensive initial service followed by a return visit roughly two to three weeks later, timed to catch the nymphs hatching from egg capsules that the first treatment could not reach. Skipping that second visit is the single most common reason a German roach problem comes back.
